Monday 22nd June 2020- Today is National Windrush Day! It was on this day, 72 years ago, that the Empire Windrush arrived in Britain, carrying on board several hundred people from the Caribbean and other countries. They wanted to start a new life in Britain, and believed there would be new opportunities for them such as jobs and education, and they would help to rebuild Britain after the Second World War. National Windrush Day is important as it celebrates the Caribbean community and their contributions to British society.
Year 6 learnt about the Empire Windrush in the Autumn Term and we learnt about key figures such as Sam King, who founded the Notting Hill Carnival. There is additional information and learning related to Windrush Day on our Google Classroom page.
